Yorkshire Terriers - Puppies - History

Yorkshire Terriers are about one hundred years old. The workingmen of North England are known to have bred the Yorkshire Terrier for catching the rats in the mineshafts. Another purpose of the new breed was to be able to penetrate into fox and badger burrows. Scotsmen are believed to have brought various types of terriers with them to Yorkshire. In all probability, the Skye Terrier was crossed with the longhaired Leeds Terrier. Other dog breeds that could have contributed to the development of the Yorkshire Terrier are the Maltese Dog, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and the Black and Tan Manchester.

At the early stage of the breed's development, the Yorkshire Terrier was a bigger dog. However, selective breeding of smaller dogs miniaturized the animal to the sizes of today's Yorkshire Terrier. It took time to develop the dog we can enjoy seeing at present. The first individual meeting the requirements of the standard appeared in a dog show in 1870.

Yorkshire Terriers - Puppies - Living Conditions

The Yorkshire Terrier is a perfect dog for apartment living. This breed does well without a yard. It is enough for the Yorkie to clown around the house and walk with its master. Sensitive to the cold and chilly weather, Yorkshire Terriers prefer warm climate.
